This page summarises what is known of Mary Barrington, daughter of Francis Barrington of Seale in Kent, who became Mary Bennett (or Mary Bennet) on marriage. |
| Mary Barrington, Neil's direct ancestor, was born to parents Francis
Barrington and Rose Porter. She was baptised on 14 Jan 1731
at Seal (also known as Seale) in Kent and was almost certainly
brought up there.
We know from the inscription on her gravestone and the will of her brother Thomas that she married William Bennett, but we do not know when, except that it was after 30 Oct 1754, the date of her father's will which refers to her as single. There is no marriage record for Mary and William in the IGI. Mary died on 29 Dec 1780 aged 49. Her end must have been as a result of some accident or infectious illness as her husband William died only two days later on 1 Jan 1781. They were both buried in West Wickham churchyard. Their inscription reads
The couple left three known children: a son, William Bennett, a daughter, Neil's direct ancestor, Elizabeth Bennett and a daughter, Ann, who married a John Best. An inscription in West Wickham churchyard reads:
