This page shows main points, names and relationships from the will of Thomas Berrington (baptised and married as Thomas Barrington), butcher of West Wickham, dated 14 July 1799 and proved 4 October 1801. The full transcript has not been attempted because the old writing is so difficult to read. |
| Note that Thomas, along with his father and others in his family,
changed his name from Barrington to Berrington sometime between 1749 and 1754.
He was both baptised and married as Thomas Barrington. His origins
were wealthy; his father, Francis
Barrington, was a gentleman (ie a man of independent means), so
Thomas presumably took up butchery because he was the youngest son.
Judging by the value of his estate, he lacked for little during his
life.
The original will can be downloaded from the National Archives. |
